Gnomesville

gnomesville3.jpgIt's been talked about in many circles, and even been discussed on Rove Live. Let's take a look at the unique and interesting tourist phenomena that is Gnomesville.

It's hard to find someone who knows just exactly how the gnomes started appearing, but one story is that it really did just start with one gnome, placed on the side of the road. Another story is that it started when the local council were building the roundabout and the workers put a game of cricket, using gnomes, in the middle of the roundabout.

Regardless of how it started, Gnomesville has now grown to a community of what some people estimate is over 1000!

Gnomesville is situated at the roundabout that joins Wellington Mill Road and Ferguson Road in the Ferguson Valley area. One of the easiest ways to get there is to head east out of Dardanup.

At the roundabout, you'll see that there are gnomes scattered everywhere - in the bush, alongside the road, down the various pathway - kids and adults alike will have a great time just trying to find them all. You might walk 20 metres one way, thinking you've seen them all, and then you'll find one peeking at you from up in a tree or from behind a log!

And it's not just a pile of gnomes on the side of the road - it really is like a little community. With groups of gnomes playing cricket, flying planes, having parties, and other such activities, you'll soon see that there's a lot going on. Meet the Rolling Gnomes (the rock band), see the Gnoman Empire, experience There's No Place Like Gnome, and many many other Gnome puns.

So what is the attraction of a bunch of gnomes on the side of the road? Well, whatever it is, it attracts busloads of people everyday. It has now become a very popular tourist attraction, one that all the tour companies and tourist bureaux promote, and people are encouraged to visit and even bring their own gnome from their own part of the world, write a little message on it, and leave it there.

This idea has led to quite an national and even international feel to the gnome community. Last time I was there I saw gnomes from London, Sydney, New York, Broome, and many other places from all over Australia and the world.

Check it out sometime. There's picnic tables for those who want to stay a while, and the surrounding countryside is beautiful, with the King Tree and Wellington Mill close by too. Make a day of it.

great place to vist but how it built up to what is now was because of one ladys determanation of reparing the gnomes and basiclly just allways makeing the place tidyer and to try to have it noticed. a job that she did well. thanks

Do you have a prison for bad gnomes? If so I would be very interested. I have a jail bird gnome, I would happily ship over the little fellow to gnomesville western australia. It was painted by a dear friend of mine.

I was thinking of heading down there for a visit with my wife soon and if you would like your gnome placed there I would be more than happy. I will even email you a picture of him there. Just as I've never been there I wouldn't know if it got a jail yet ?? We could start one ??

I took a good one of a Gnome signpost at a rest stop not far from there and would really like a copy if anyone could help. thanks Ann

We have been going down to the south west for years and came across Gnomesville quite by chance. we have put down the start to our family of gnomes and are building on it when ever we take family and friends with us to show them. we were there earlier this year when a rock band ( we think it was Short Stack) were filming a clip for the music video ( maybe someone can verify this for us?).

Our last visit was only a week ago and unfortunately the land to the south of the stream has been reclaimed by the property owners and has been fenced off and many gnomes have been re located.

We will be returning to Gnomesville later this year to share the experience with our family from overseas :)

we decided not to follow instructions on GPS.....an we are so glad we made that choice, we got caught up behind some heavy machinery re doing the road but when we emerged from dust cloud we were stunned by what we saw......Gnoming around gnomeville was the most amazing experience.  dont recall seeing a jail...was a policeman with a multiGNoma though.  taking the grand kids down with their own personal gnome soon

This sounds like a wonderful place for my gnomes to visit. We have about 80 different styles in our store if you need one to take to gnomesville or want to decorate your own little village, be sure to visit our store. Happy Gnoming!

What a delightful place to visit.  We visited and placed three gnomes plus a word rock under the South African section; so if you visit there and spot them please tell them we say hi.  Fantastic idea.

We are planning a school holiday excursion and would appreciate costs of entry and any catering you may be able to provide. Nurture works is a non profit organisation based in Busselton.

This looks awesome! We have a roaming gnome (a gnome that you take to random places like the pub etc and get photos) and I think this will be perfect for his next adventure!! We may have to bring a friend of his and leave them there to keep all the other gnomes company.. Myself, Herbert G Nome (look him up on facebook, lol) and my crew will just have to go up in a few weeks for a roming gnome adventure.. Herbert wants to know if you have beer..lol
