The 2010 Bunbury Marathon will be held on Sunday 16th May 2010, proudly sponsored by Protector Alsafe. In its 29th year, this event has grown from strength to strength and now offers five categories for participants to choose from, even if they do seem a little daunting for the average individual:
Teams of 2 can enter the 21.1 km Half Marathon Relay
Individuals can enter either the 21 km Walk or
The 21.1 km Half Marathon or
The 42.2 km Marathon or
The 50 km Ultra
All events start and finish at The Bunbury Runners Club on Ocean Drive and proceed along the coast towards Dalyellup, providing excellent scenery for the majority of the course. It’s often a little windy in Bunbury, but this doesn’t deter the participants who either save a little energy when running into the breeze, or use it to their advantage when it is blowing them along, hopefully towards the finish line. Around 250 individuals and teams of two took part in the 2009 Bunbury Marathon, spread across the various distances.
Karel Burger was the 2009 winner of the Marathon event, in a time of 2:53:01 and Pauline Overington was the first lady home in 3:07:34.
The Half Marathon was won by Gordon Burgess in 1:16:39, with Fiona Collins leading the ladies home in a very respectable 1:35:15.
Graham Cunningham won the 50 km Ultra in a blistering time of 3:57:51 and Christine Pattinson was the first lady across the line in 4:24:54.
Lyn Ventris changed the status quo in the 21 km Walk by beating the boys back to the bar in 1:47:02, with Garry Hastie chasing hard, but unable to catch the flying Ventris, finishing in 1:52:09.
The Bunbury Marathon has an excellent reputation of offering value for money to its participants with all finishers receiving a medal on completion of their event, including the walkers. In addition to a great range of place and spot prizes there will also be commemorative glasses or mugs for the ultra marathon, marathon and individual half marathon participants.
Entries are open now, so if you are feeling fit and would like to give any of the distances above a go, then the website with all the details is here – www.bunburyrunnersclub.mysouthwest.com.au
