DUNSBOROUGH BAKERY

By Graeme Olsen

The Dunsborough Bakery is a bit of an icon in the south west.

Dunsborough BakeryI remember even as a kid growing up in Perth, having never been to Dunsborough, hearing about this "famous bakery". Nearly everyone I knew who had been to the south west had visited it and made the same comments about it being the perfect place to drop in and grab an absolutely scrumptious morning tea snack (or any kind of snack for that matter).

The Bakery is one of the oldest remaining businesses in Dunsborough, having been set up by a guy called Anthony Curtis in 1941. Anthony was known as "Nanty", and would prepare his doughs at home and then transport them to the bakery by horse and cart.

He'd then cook them in his oven he created himself out of mud and straw bricks. Crude as it was, the oven didn't even have a thermometer, and the story goes that he used to place a feather in the oven, and would know when the bread was ready when the feather curled.

Nanty would then deliver the fresh bread - again, by horse and cart - to local homes and businesses, even going as far away as Yallingup.

Since then the bakery has undergone many changes, but is still well known for it's produce. It's a common thing to see the store bustling with locals, tourists, surfies and passer-by's alike, who are either long term fans of the place, or seeing for themselves for the first time, after hearing a friend or relative rave about it.

Dunsborough Bakery is no doubt most renowned for it's Sourdough Breads. These are a yeast free creation of firm and crusty bread, made from a natural living culture - great for sandwich’s and toasting alike. More information can be found at www.dunsboroughbakery.com.

The Bakery is currently located on Naturaliste Terrace in Dunsborough. Check it out.

Comments:

"Your article caught me eye! I remember my Mum pleading with anybody going out to Dunsborough to please stop at the bakery and buy her 7 chocolate éclairs!  Later on I met one of the women who were working there during that era, and she said they used to put vanilla essence in the custard as a special touch. It certainly worked..."

"It certainly is the only place to buy meat pies. They are the best!"
