Japan Oil, Gas and Metals Corporation (JOGMEC) recently announced a $2million joint exploration agreement with WA Company Doral who operate a mineral sands mine near Burekup.
It is well known that the south west is a world’s leading production centre of mineral sands and the JOGMEC/Doral deal is expected to lead to further discoveries of new mineral sands deposits in the region in particular Ilmenite which is used in the production of paint pigment, paper and plastics and also Zircon which has abrasive and insulating purposes. The majority of the products are exported to Asia and the United States.
The exploration process will see numerous shallow holes about twenty metres deep bored into the ground with the aim of highlighting minerals in the deposits. The exploration region is situated in the area extended from the current mine operated by Doral and covers a tenement of some 175 square kilometres.
“Without this investment our exploration program would be quite limited” said General Manger Mike Ferraro. “The deal with JOGMEC will mean that we can continue to expand our operations in the south west.”
Doral employs nearly 115 local people and uses a large number of local contractors and suppliers as well as supporting numerous community initiatives, including the Dardanup Bull and Bush Festival, Telethon and Bridging The Gap.
