Nothing Dampens Leeuwin's Vintage Festival

Leeuwin Vintage Fest 2010 067(1).JPGAs the gates opened at Leeuwin Estate in Margaret River for the annual Vintage Festival, it looked as though the spattering of rain, and dark storm clouds rolling in might cast a shadow over the event.  But it didn’t stop the hundreds of wine and food enthusiasts from lining up to experience the delights that the Margaret River wine region has to offer.

The rain came early, yet was light enough to not dampen the spirits of visitors.  And there was no shortage of local produce to engage the taste buds.  With over 50 wineries from across the region, around ten food producers and a number of artisans and local service providers present, it was a great opportunity to revisit some old favourites, and experience those relatively new to the region.  Up on the stage in the Leeuwin Amphitheatre was a lineup of a musical artists – Noah Shilkin, Paige Trantham, Threadbare Monarchs, Frankly and Grace Barbe – who provided the festival with a chilled-out vibe as you either wandered around the stalls, wine glass in hand, or sat down on the grass with a picnic and some nosh from the local producers.

I decided to spend the morning having a look at some relatively new wine producers to the Margaret River region.  Some to note are The Alchemists, of Margaret River, who have a fantastic looking label, and are sticking to what Margaret River does well.   Another is Windows Estate, located at the northern end of Margaret River, that has a Chenin Blanc bursting with luscious tropical fruits, making for very easy drinking, along with the many other varieties they produce.

The atmosphere at the Leeuwin Vintage Festival is so relaxed and laid back, which is a great representation of the Margaret River Region itself.  I could have spent all day, wandering around tasting great wine, eating great food, and listening to great music.  All good things must come to an end, and the pre packaged festival surely has for this year.  Instead of waiting until next Vintage Festival to see them all, you could use of some of your free weekends and get yourself to any of the great cellar doors and restaurants out there – you can experience the atmosphere of the region all year round.
