JazzWA WORKSHOPS

Do you enjoy making music? Are you young? Do you play a bit, and want to be better and cooler?

A really rare opportunity is coming to Bunbury and if you want to play along with some of the best Jazz musicians in the nation, and learn just a skerrick of the stuff they have spent years

putting together, think seriously about attending this Workshops put together by Jazz WA for 11 and 12 February.

Western Australia has produced four James Morrison Scholarship winners since 1999, which is a testament to the jazz education and talent that exists in our state. At last year's 20th Anniversary Celebration Concert for WAYJO, James Morrison had the opportunity to perform with all four of the recent winners, and was so impressed by their talent that he promptly decided to form a new group.

Trumpet and piano player Mat Jodrell, saxophonist Troy Roberts, electric bassist Dane Alderson and drummer Andrew Fisenden (respectively 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003 winners) were invited to travel to Sydney to record a new album with James in front of a live audience at the Sydney Opera House. The album, entitled "On The Edge", was released in October 2003, and the group travelled to Europe in the same month to promote the album, joined by Simon Stockhausen (son of contemporary classical composer Karl-Heinz Stockhausen) on keyboards.

As part of the highly popular 2004 JAZZ WINDOWS Series, JAZZWA invited the four James Morrison Scholarship Winners, Mat Jodrell trumpet, Troy Roberts sax, Dane Alderson bass and Andrew Fisendon drums, together with virtuoso guitarist Freddie Grigson, to open the series. The result was outstanding, with the boys in fine form following their sensational year of recording and touring with James.

The band has a couple of really interesting things on for the weekend of 11 - 13 February. They'll be headlining at the opening of the South Western Times Survey on the evening of Friday, February 11, and Saturday 12 they'll be in Busselton as part of the festivities for Geographe Bay's Yacht Club's race week, but to us probably the most important thing is the chance for young people to attend and learn through the workshop series. Whatever genre you're into, this is a chance to spend time with people who've started to make a living from their art, they're awesome at what they do, and they can show you at least some of what makes that work for them.

This band represents some of the finest musicianship in the country, and JAZZWA is delighted to be able to present the James Morrison Scholarship Winners Tour and Workshops, made possible through additional funding support from Country Arts WA. The Tour will take the scholarship winners to Bunbury Fri 11- Sun 13 Feb, Albany Fri 18- Sun 20 Feb, Cowamarup Sun 27 Feb and Pemberton (dates to be confirmed). With leading guest supporting artists musicians including Libby Hammer, Freddie Grigson and Glyn MacDonald, this is a musical opportunity not to be missed.

Cost will be $80 plus GST. Clearer details should be gained by contacting Glyn MacDonald, JMSW Tour Coordinator, 182 Surrey Road, Rivervale, WA 6103 Tel: (08) 9470 5789 mobile: 0412 932963. He'll be able to make sure you get registration forms.
