Nannup is a pretty place, it’s well worth the energy to get inland and see what it has to offer. For many years the town has become a focus for a contingent of folk music performers and fans, as the one (long) weekend of the year rolls around and the town puts on a big show. Given that the town is worth getting to anyway, this could be the time.
This year there are more than 40 artists performing, and the headliners are names that most of us know. Ash Grunwald was not such a star when he signed to come to Nannup, but in the last year he’s taken out the 2005 album of the year at the Australian Blues Awards, made regular appearances on TV both in Australia and overseas, and scored the gig as on top of a big touring schedule he hosts “roots and all” on JJJ. Organisers are patting themselves on the back for an astute move. Mick Thomas, formerly of Weddings, Parties Anything, is also known to many of us, and some that are new to me |

Folk music as a genre can be pretty broad. Saturday night there will be a “traditional” concert, and there are offerings for the more adventurous on Sunday night. There are also some “quirky” acts, which are worth a look. Overall the festival promises something for everyone.
The music is at the core of the weekend, but Nannup promises to turn on a great event at a number of levels. There is a free children’s festival, there are workshops to develop your own folk music skills, stalls, breakfast in the village green, street parades, and a range of eating and drinking houses. The shows are at a range of venues, so the weekend could afford an opportunity to see hotels, parks, and wineries and get that real sense of what Nannup is about.
It’s all there to be involved in. The weekend is Friday 3 March to Monday 6 March, 2006, and you’ll need a ticket. Enquiries can be made on 9756 1511. You’d really need to get onto it to secure accommodation, but it’s worth a try on 9756 1211 (Nannup Tourist Centre). More information can be had on
www.nannupmusicfestival.org and you can get your tickets on line there.
