SALOMON MASTERS

by Dave Roberts

Margaret River. A lot of people think there is only surf and wine to the town. That's not true, but it's true that both the wine and the surf is world class and just one of those two is enough to get most people to put the town on their must see itinerary.

We're sorry to do it Margaret River, but we want to talk about surfing and leave the punters to discover the range of things that makes you a great spot.

The Margaret River Masters has been an icon event for surfers the world over for a long, long time. It's now the Salomon Masters, and the French company couldn't have picked a better way to broaden their snow based equipment range into the water. The masters has developed a following that ensures that Salomon will be a name that everyone in the surf knows instantly.

The Masters at Margaret River is the premier World Qualifying Series (WQS) surfing event on the world tour and is regarded by many of the world's best surfers as one of the most prestigious international tournaments to win.

It is an opportunity for these surfers to surf a variety of breaks when not in competition and also sample some of the world's finest wines.

It's a coup for surfing and for Western Australia that the event runs back to back with the the Bico Classic Women's competition. So if you visit Margaret River during the event you'll get to see both the best guys and the best women, anywhere in the world, on some of the world's best waves.

The sport has been a bit specialised, and attendances aren't really up there with the footy, but the 2002 Salomon Masters final was watched by 3000 people from the beach. In another first, the Salomon Masters has contracted international television broadcast company Transworld Media International (TWI) to film and produce a one hour television special of the tournament. This will be seen on national TV and distributed to over 42 international TV networks around the world and seen on 15 international airlines in flight news and sports programs. Things are getting more mainstream all the time.

March and April are the best times for surf at Margaret River with good swells, light winds and generally sunny days so the surfing action will be nothing short of spectacular.
