THE VARIETY CLUB SPLASH
By Dave Roberts
Ever see the documentaries about
the variety club bash, where teams in old cars rally
through the bush and get up to all kinds of silliness
in the evenings? I've watched a couple and I can't
imagine how much fun it is.
Sadly for me, it requires a large
amount of time off and there seems to be a lot of
cash involved in getting started anyway, so I'd
kind of given up on ever being part of it.
Not long ago I heard about the variety
club splash, much the same process but sailing up
the west coast in boats. For me the same limits
apply, work pressure, not enough money to do several
weeks of sailing, and of course the small matter
of having a boat.
If you've ever wanted to get at least
a taste of it, there is one way to do it that's
just become available. Major Tom Yacht charters
are joining the splash, and have spaces available
for paying crew at the tine fee of $100 per day.
We covered Major Tom a little while back in our
enterprise section, it's still worth a look, the
boat is big, safe and comfortable, you'd be sailing
with an experienced skipper, and for as short a
time as one day, you could both join the fun and
help charity.
First Day of the cruise is 26th April,
sailing from Busselton to Bunbury, then Bunbury
to Mandurah on the 27th. You can see how many chances
to join in there'll be before they hit the north
coast, though sometimes you'll be out for a few
days.
