VICTORY IN COLLIE - ONE NIGHT STAND

By Dave Roberts

You’ve gotta love it when a couple of people get the bit between their teeth and go after something that they want for themselves, and which is good for the people around them.

Sarah and Jason Stanley got an idea into their collective head that it would be good to bring some major live music to Collie.  The ABC’s triple j youth radio station runs something called the one night stand every year where they undertake to get some top bands together and bring them to a town that would normally not be able to attract that level of talent.

Just because it seemed like a good idea, Jason and Sarah had a go at getting the one night stand for Collie in 2006.  This is a national competition and their first try wasn’t successful.  Triple j were really encouraging and gave them good feedback, so another attempt was made for the 2007.

The feedback was good again and the message came back, please don’t be disheartened, try again.  Sarah confesses that around now, she was pretty disheartened and she credits Jason with being ready to go again, and encourage her.

About the same time as the decision was being made to have a go for the 2008 one night stand, another group was forming.  Stones throw is a group of young people from Collie who formed to bring youth activity and especially live music to Collie.  Sarah and Jason now had company, co workers, and some really good purpose in youth development behind them.  2008 may have been make or break, so the help and the networking was really valuable.  Clearly this was no half hearted attempt, Sarah had taken courses in graphic design, she and Jason had worked at Southbound, and at the Blues and roots festival to gain experience and contacts.  The members of stones throw were on board and calling in contacts and favours everywhere.  The Collie bid for 08 was unbeatable.

So what do you get for all this?  Well three of the nation’s high profile bands will arrive at the Collie Football oval and play on April 26.  It will be an all ages, free entry gig.  Collie will just about double in size for the day.  There will be camping at the Collie Showgrounds, but we’re told that if you wanted to stay in a hotel or motel in town, you should have tried that before now.

You get to decide the shape of things, and the Collie one night stand will be alcohol and drug free.  That’s how the organisers wanted it, that’s what some of the sponsors have already declared they want, and a bunch of WA’s finest will be along to ensure it happens.  You get to offer real, high quality opportunities to your local young people, and you get to bask in the success of doing something you really wanted.
The One night stand will feature Cog, Faker, Pnau, and one local band.

Those who want to open the show and who are from the South West should upload a demo track to the triple j website before April 6 at www.triplejunearthed.com/competitions/default.aspx?TripleJCompetitionId=71.  It’s a big chance, so don’t miss out.  The event will be at the footy oval, it will have music, show rides, food and drink vendors, and a chance to make 10,000 mates.  Be there and congratulate Collie.
