CHECK OUT THE SLED DOGS
By Dave Roberts
There’s no denying the weather has been beautiful. Standing in the fantastic afternoon winter sun I’m struck by the conflict I feel between just adoring what we’ve got and fretting about the rain we should have by now. Have we really wrecked the planet?
One of the by products of the dry has been the coldness. Neither here nor there to many of us, wear another layer. Some of us really struggle with the cold, and others find a blessing in it. One place the cold weather is really appreciated is in the sport of sledding (yes, with dogs).
Sleddog racing is gathering pace in Western Australia. There are teams in the Perth Metro area, and in the South West, where the weather is cooler, there is a separate association.
Sleddogs South West presents an invitation to witness a training session this Saturday, 8th July. The fun and action starts around 4 pm at the Myalup pine plantation near Harvey, though it could be delayed until the temperature drops enough. If you’re going to check it out, call Paula on 0412 231 543 for directions.
Preparations are underway for the Harvey races in September (2nd and 3rd), and while it might be too late to be ready for that if you’re starting from scratch, if you love working with your dogs this could be something to look at.
The September races are attracting teams from across Australia, so you’re looking at national sport. Watch out for a full feature but figure out whether you can get to the training session for a look this weekend.
