SOUTH WEST WINE TOURS

By Graeme Olsen

With over 100 wineries located throughout our scenic forests and coastal areas, the south west is a great place for a wine tasting tour.

Here's a recipe for a great day out.

On a nice sunny day, grab a group of friends or family, get in a car or two (or perhaps on some motorbikes!), and head out for a day tour of some of our award winning wineries.

When we think of vineyards in the south west, we often think of Margaret River straight away. Margaret River is certainly the most well known and prolific wine growing area in the south west, but in fact there are 5 official wine growing regions in this area:

  • Blackwood Valley wine region
  • Geographe wine region
  • Manjimup wine region
  • Margaret River wine region
  • Pemberton wine region

And all of these regions are pretty much situated alongside one another.

What does this mean? It means that wherever you are in the south west, you can drive in any direction and in no time come across a vineyard, or a bunch of them. Combine this with the fact that most of the vineyards offer free tasting, or a restaurant, sometimes accommodation, or beautiful grounds to wander, and you've got the ingredients for a perfect day out.

What else could be better than a day out in the sunshine, travelling wherever you want to go, tasting award winning wines, eating fantastic food, and enjoying good conversation with those around you?

Now for those of you who don't know much about wine, don't worry. You'll find that the vineyard owners and operators are usually more than happy to have a chat with you about their wines. Just turn up and be prepared to learn something!

Or perhaps you'd like to try out one of the many wine education courses available (homework was never so much fun). Then you won't be embarrassed because you didn't know what a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc was, or because you thought "full-bodied" meant you ate too much.

And it should go without saying, but here's a reminder anyway - don't drink too much and drive. Apart from being very dangerous for you and anyone else nearby, you don't want to be the main star in your own Don't Do This story.
