IT'S SHOW TIME!

Your Guide To The Local Agricultural Shows In The South West

by Graeme Olsen

It's the time of year for shows. Great sights, great times and great weather.

Being an ex-Perth person, my experience of agricultural shows had always been the Perth Royal Show. There's no doubt it's a huge event, and the kids love it, but there were always some things about it that were a little difficult to handle.

Like negotiating heavy traffic, and big crowds, to get there. If we'd decided to drive, finding a parking spot was a nightmare. Then after that was achieved, we'd join the queue at the gate for while, before paying to get in. And boy did we pay. By the time we'd got inside the front gates, as a family we'd have already spent over $50. Once inside, we'd join the swarm of people and spend the day seeing as much as

we could before it was time to go - and find our way home again.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the Royal Show, but living in the south west I've come to love the local agricultural shows we have. Compared to Perth, they have such a community feel about them, and they are fantastic value for money. At very little cost, our family can have a great day out, see a wide range of exhibitions, and the kids (and some of us adults) can try out the rides, showbags, and treats. Stay late enough at some of the shows and you'll even see fireworks.

It's a great time of year to get out and see these shows, and to enjoy the sights, sounds, and scents of spring. Check out the agricultural and other displays (you might even learn something), sample the local produce, go on some rides, have a hotdog and coke, fill the kids up with sugar, buy some show bags, be entertained by performers. There's something very Australian about it all.

In addition to the agricultural shows, there's an abundance of other shows and festivals on at this time of year. Don't forget to visit our calendar to check out what's happening in your local area. Get outdoors and enjoy it!
