CACTUS GAMES 2006

Extreme action returns to Bunbury.

Action to the extreme is set to descend on the South West, with Bunbury playing host to the second annual Cactus Games action sport and music festival on November 25 and 26, 2006.

The popular, adrenaline-pumped weekend draws spectators from Perth and right across the South West.  Thousands of teenagers and young adults are expected to attend, many of whom head to Bunbury from nearby ‘schoolies’ celebrations that traditionally take place in South West towns during November.

Crowds will flock to Bunbury’s Bicentennial Square on Saturday, November 25, to witness more than 80 top action sport athletes perform breathtaking aerial stunts in Drug Aware FMX demos (freestyle moto-cross), Hillzeez Skateboarding Spectacular and BMX exhibitions.

In a Western Australian first, top wakeboarders will risk it all towed by a high-powered winch, performing thrilling aerial tricks along sliders, connecting two specially-designed land-based waterways.

There’ll be athlete autograph sessions, a Junior Skate Showdown, a South West DJ Showdown and more.

Saturday night will feature the Cactus Concert, with a red-hot line-up of bands performing live, including Karnivool, alongside one of Melbourne’s hottest new bands Antiskeptic, the South West own Cowtown, and emerging acts Operation:Beehive from Perth and Grand Fatale` from Melbourne.

Sunday, November 26 will see Bunbury’s stunning beaches showcase a Big-air Kiteboarding competition and the Barbados Big Trick Wakeboarding title, where athletes will contest a total prize purse of $3,500.

Event Director Tim Thirsk said the event had received considerable support from sponsors and the Bunbury business community, enabling it to return for a second year.

“It is great to be able to bring Cactus Games back to Bunbury and there is no doubt that the event positions the City of Bunbury on the national map for action sports enthusiasts,” he said.

According to Bunbury’s City Life Executive Manager Anthony Blee, the City was proud to see the continuation of Cactus Games.

“Cactus Games is an extremely popular entertainment attraction, both for our local residents and visiting tourists to the region,” Mr Blee said.  “It has helped establish a vibrant new image for the city, as an epicentre for action sports and youth music in Australia.”

Chris Tate, Regional Manager for EventsCorp, echoed the City’s sentiments.

“Events like Cactus Games generate valuable visitation for Bunbury, which traditionally, has been famous for its dolphins and shopping,” Mr Tate said.

“Not only do events boost the local tourism industry, they boost the local economy and contribute to building community pride, which is important for the region.”

Major supporters of Cactus Games 2006 are the City of Bunbury and EventsCorp, together with Drug Aware, Vodafone, Department of Sport and Recreation, Frucor ‘V’ Energy Drink, Hot FM, GWN, Bunbury Mail, Odyssey 2020 eyewear, Homegrown Maniacs, Hillzeez, Barbados and Unleashed Nautic.
