HOW WE MET

This month we thought we just had to share some of the great stories submitted to us as part of our Valentine's Day competition last month. We asked people to tell us in 200 words or less how they met their partner. Here's some of the responses.

FIRST, THE RUNNERS UP:

From Jerry:

As a 25 year old single Policeman living in Broome and establishing a business on the side, keeping a house clean was not high on my list of daily priorities. My house mate had an idea - "How about we hire a house cleaner to come and sort this joint out?" he said.

As I was about to race out the door one typically hot Broome day, a young lady turns up at our house. "Hi - I've come to do some cleaning."

"I'm Jerry - there's cold water in the fridge, the air conditioner control is over there, and feel free to use the stereo - I gotta run." That was it - our first conversation. A far cry from love at first sight. The cleaning invoice read the same each week - $30.00 - Cleaning - signed "Sadie". I didn't even know her real name. A few weeks later, "Sadie" staggers into the Broome night spot - "Tokyo Joes". Intoxicated and having come from one of those male review shows - she felt vulnerable. She glances around the nightclub searching for someone she could trust. As I sat minding my own business in a lounge chair - "Sadie" sits and puts her arm around me. "Can you look after me?" she says.

"Sure." I said. 12 years and three children later - I'm still looking after her!!

From Karen:

During my travels in Europe I decided that the good food was taking its toll on my figure and I needed to lose some weight - so I chose a cycling holiday to see the South of Ireland. The girl I was cycling with was a regular cyclist (unlike myself). In the bar on the first night she got chatting to these two very fit guys. One a time trial cyclist and the other an amatuer triathlete. To my horror they decided we should all cycle together. At the first hill the next day it became obvious that I was outclassed and holding everyone else back.

The triathlete - instead of leaving me to battle on my own, actually cycled around and around me as I painfully made my way up the mountains (known as hills). I was impressed - he must have cycled twice the distance of any one else on the tour and he was impressed that I still managed to smile at the top of the hills. Twelve years later we are still together and expecting our first baby in February.

From Melissa:

A nerd I thought, as I lined up the 8 ball with my cue. I had come to the house warming party with my brother, who looks like something out of a firemans calender. We'd spend the night laughing and kidding around so its no wonder the guy trying to catch my eye was thinking he had some competition. All night the guy, Simon, would try and get my attention but to no avail. Finally my brother found a girl and I was left on my own. Now it was Simons opportunity to go in for the kill. He sided me up next to the stereo as I was choosing the music and said:

"Would you like to come for a ride on my motorbike sometime?".

That was it, little did he know that I was a bit partial to the odd motorbike. From that moment we began a conversation which lasted all night long, in fact we haven't stopped talking, laughing and having fun and it's now 3 years on. And if you think this is a good story you should here how he proposed!

AND NOW... THE WINNING ENTRY:

From Sara:

I was living in England and I had a very professional job as marketing a promotions manager for a top leisure company (you know, hair in a bun, high heel, suit wearing, champagne drinking type!). I was working on restyling a mega club and I ordered a new lighting and sound system............well the day it started being installed I spotted a pair of legs on a ladder that would warm even the coldest heart. All I could see for days from my office was these legs ending in a snug fitting pair of Billabong boardies. I had to go and find out who they belonged to........they belonged to the cutest Aussie in England! When we made eye contact "it" was definitely THERE!! But being the professional boss that I was, there was NO room for fraternising with the hired help!! Especially if the hired help came in the form of a young Aussie surfie looking type!

He kept asking me out and I said no every time. Until one day (3 months later) I agreed just because he was so nice and sweet and I thought it would just be a one off..............it wasn't. After a fantastic night of guitar playing, video watching laughing bliss, we drove down to the video store to drop the video off and I ran in to the news agency to buy a lottery ticket because it was a mega draw. In England it is well known that there is a 1 in 44 MILLION chance of winning the lottery. He decided to run in and get a ticket too........and to our complete and utter amazement.......we had chosen EXACTLY THE SAME NUMBERS! I knew then and so did he that we had just won our very own lottery.

Today, 6 years later, I have moved here to Bunbury with the love of my life, we are happily married and live a wonderful life together. And it all started with a pair of legs on a ladder..........and a 1 in 44 million chance of a lottery win. Even if there was no money in the win, what we won that day by fate or a higher power was each other and no amount of money could buy what we have!

We hope you enjoy your prize Sarah.

Thank you very much to everyone who entered. It was enjoyable reading all those stories.
