RESULTS - SOUTH WEST LIFE SURVEY 2005

First of all, thankyou to everyone who completed our 2005 South West Life Survey. The response was overwhelming, and we got a great snapshot of our readers, and are happy to give you some of the results below.

Our survey was able to split the results into south west residents and non-south west residents.

From the results of the south west residents, we found that on 23% of residents were born in the south west. The remainder moved here from somewhere else. And when we asked the south west residents how long they've lived here, the results showed:

Over 10 years - 55%
Between 5 and 10 years - 16%
Between 2 and 5 years - 15%
Less than 2 years - 14%

which shows that the majority of south west residents are "long term" residents, having been here more than 10 years.

When we asked people where they lived before they moved to the south west, the results were:

Perth - 44%
Elsewhere in WA - 23%
Elsewhere in Australia - 20%
Overseas - 13%

We asked a few questions about the lifestyle of south west residents, including "How far do you live from the ocean?". The results to this question were:

Less than 5km - 56%
Between 5km and 10km - 19%
Between 10km and 50km - 14%
Over 50km - 11%

Other questions in this style showed that the majority of our readers are in the 30 to 50 year bracket, and are wage/salary earners or self employed.

We also discovered that South West Life has a large number of readers who don't live in the south west. When we asked them where they lived, we found that 98% of them still lived in Australia, broken up as follows:

Perth - 44%
Elsewhere in WA - 7%
Elsewhere in Australia - 49%

We also discovered that most of these people holiday in the south west either at least once a year, or once every few years.

We also received a tremendous amount of feedback about the South West Life website, with 91% of respondents rating it either 4 or 5 out of 5. We also ended up with thousands of comments and suggestions about the site, and we will be going over those very closely and hopefully implementing some of the very good suggestions in the near future (but without changing too much - we got many requests to leave everything as it is).

And so, is there any such thing as an "average" south west resident? Definitely not. But if we were to describe a person who fitted into all of the most common answers in the survey, this is what they would look like:

"Margaret lives in the south west. She is between 30 and 40 years old and is employed (either full or part time). She moved to the south west over 10 years ago from Perth and now lives less than 5km from the beach. South West Life is the only website she uses to get information about the south west. She is subscribed to it, and gives it a 4 out of 5 rating.

Thanks again for all your entries. If you have any questions you'd like us to ask in our next survey (next year) please let us know at admin@southwestlife.com.au.
