KAYE COGAN

by Akita Olsen

"Life's too short to wear beige"

Kaye is a primary school teacher from Bunbury who has a unique way of bringing life and excitement into her classroom each day. Just the kind of person we love to tell you about in South West Life. There's never a dull moment in Room 7.

Moving to the South West 15 years ago when her husband got a job transfer, Kaye found that Bunbury offered all that she needed and more. Being close to the bush, the beach, and only a 2 hour drive to the state's capital is not bad.

The results of Kaye's efforts speak for themselves. Nominated twice for the National Excellence in Teaching Award, Kaye thoroughly enjoys her career. She is a flamboyant teacher and it didn't suprise me that her first career choice was in fact acting. She loves the children and wants them to experience new things. As one TV ad says: "think outside the square you live in".

Kaye's daily outfits are outrageous and most days you require sunglasses to have a conversation with her. When she gave up some of her time to talk to me for this story, she was wearing her "chilli" outfit: a brightly coloured suit with a red plastic chilli hanging from each ear lobe. One day I felt compelled to approach her and made a comment that her wardrobe must be huge to contain all the costumes and she said "no dear, I just don't have any normal clothes".

Kaye is a laugh and vibrant person to be around and the kids she teaches are blessed to be in her company. Rather than stick to one teaching style, she aims to vary the way she teaches throughout the day as all children learn in different ways. Most classes are held with great fun and zest. It's usual to hear music flowing out of the classroom, song and laugher, even

dancing. Kaye strongly believes that through experiencing things the children learn more and enjoy themselves which results in better outcomes. You're more likely to remember something if you actually did it and were involed in it, rather than simply reading it once.

Kaye would love to see more money for public education and an increased appreciation for teachers. It's a noble career, and becoming harder as the typical family unit is changing and society is changing from picnics and experiences to media overload. Her husband is very supportive and surely her kids must find her a blast.

Kaye's class is enjoying an Asian theme this term, and is finishing up with an Asian banquet and ceremonial Japanese tea demonstration. The kids really enjoy the themes that their class takes on. Being involved in all the processes excites them and they have pride and enthusiasm. I hope to join the class for the Asian feast and can't wait to sample some of the real Asian dishes and to see Kaye in yet another fantastic costume.

What a legend!!!

Kaye's contract at her current school has now expired and it's time to move on. But she wouldn't change teaching for quids. If you have any teaching positions available, or even if you just want to say hello, you can email Kaye on kcogan@starwon.com.au.
