Nannup

A walk down the main street of Nannup is like a walk back in time.

Just three hours drive from Perth, this historic mill town is nestled amongst the hills alongside the Blackwood River.  Surrounded by national parks and centrally located in the South-West, Nannup is often described as the central cog in a wheel, offering easy access to neighbouring towns including Balingup, Bridgetown, Manjimup, Pemberton, Margaret River and Augusta.

The word “Nannup” comes from the Noongar people and interprets as “stopping place”.  The Shire of Nannup was founded in 1834. It covers an area of 2,953 square km and embraces the town and localities of Nannup, Donnelly River, Bidelia, Carlotta, Cundinup, Scott River, Lake Jasper, Darradup and Barrabup.

Eighty-five percent of the Shire is under forest, however the rich soils, high rainfall and an excellent climate also provides ideal conditions for a wide range of agricultural activities, including dairying, beef cattle, horticulture, aquaculture, agroforestry, viticulture and hobby farming. The town is serviced well and is blessed with a number of nature and recreational reserves, and public buildings. Environment and heritage issues play a large part in the community’s culture.

Nannup is part of the outstanding Balingup/Nannup/Bridgetown tourist drive, one of the very best in the State. Coastal access, National Parks and its close proximity to the Margaret River Wine region bring many people flocking back to the pretty little town in the centre of the South West.

Tourism plays a large role in the life of the community which in its marketing approach describes the Shire of Nannup as The Garden Village.  A favourite for scenery, particularly forest and nature based pastimes, Nannup has benefited from a stable economy and minimal development over a long period of time.

Nannup has a strong sense of community and this is what many residents say attracts them to the region.  There is a calendar of events that celebrates community life and showcases the attractions to visitors.  The Nannup Music Festival, Flower and Garden Festival and Quit Forest Rally are some of the events that attract a diverse audience.
